An IGF-1 test is a test used to help diagnose the cause of growth abnormalities , evaluate pituitary function and monitor the treatment of GH deficiencies and excesses. IGF-1 testing is ordered by your doctor when:
- Along with a GH stimulation test, when a child has symptoms of GH deficiency, such as slowed growth rate and a short stature.
- An IGF-1 is ordered when a doctor suspects that someone has underactive pituitary gland and at intervals to monitor those in GH therapy, observing their increase high velocity and absolute height.
- IGF-1 testing is ordered along with GH suppression test, when a child has symptoms of gigantism and when adults shows signs of acromegaly.
