SHBG Testing

The sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) test is done to measure the concentration of SHBG in the blood.

SHBG is a protein that is produced by the liver and binds lightly to testosterone , dehydrotestosterone (DHT) and estradiol (an estrogen) .

Changes in the SHBG levels in circulation is affected by age and sex by decreased or increased testosterone or estrogen production and can be affected by certain diseases and conditions like hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism and obesity.

A test is ordered by your doctor to:

• In conjunction with other test to evaluate the status of the person’s androgen male hormones to help determine the cause of infertility , decreased in sex drive and erectile dysfunction especially when total testosterone results are inconsistent with the clinical signs.
